Pearls From the Pro: Jane Burns on MFM

ULTRASOUND SOLUTIONS CORP. is pleased to welcome back Jane J.K. Burns, AS, RT, RDMS, MFM Ultrasound Manager at Texas Children’s Hospital/Pavilion for Women, for a medley of Obstetrical Ultrasound topics.

Course Description:

Do you feel confident in your ability to assess patients who present with complicated pregnancies? This compilation of topics, which includes details on how to correctly evaluate twin pregnancies, aneuploidy (and associated markers), as well as manage Quality Assessment in the Obstetrical Lab, will offer Sonographers an opportunity to bolster their knowledge when evaluating the pregnant patient. (Approved for 3 SDMS CME credits, provided one is present for the entire event)

Course Objectives: Upon completion of this educational activity, the participant will be able to:

  • Describe different types of twinning
  • State the importance of identification of the chorions and amnions
  • Describe risks inherent with Twins/Multiple gestations
  • List current assessment protocols for multiple gestations
  • Identify differences in TTTS and TAPS via fetal Doppler evaluation
  • Discuss current treatment options for TTTS and TAPS
  • Outline the difference between normal variants and sonographic markers for aneuploidy
  • Describe lab screens used to assess fetal risk for aneuploidy
  • Identify critical vs. soft markers for aneuploidy
  • Describe ultrasound accuracy for aneuploidy
  • Describe the difference between a traditional ultrasound QA process and FIA (Focused Image Assessment)
  • Outline how to implement FIA in the ultrasound department
  • Provide examples and guidelines for FIA

About Our Speaker:

Jane J.K. Burns, AS, RT, RDMS, started her ultrasound career in 1980 and has been working in the field of Perinatal/MFM for the past 30+ years. She presently holds ultrasound registries in Abdomen, OB/GYN, and Fetal Echo, as well as NTQR certification. 

For the past 14 years, Jane has expanded her field of expertise to include work as a Sonography Educator. She has co-authored an OB/GYN Registry Review Workbook. Presently, she is an Ultrasound Educator at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, in addition to being the Perinatal Ultrasound Manager at Texas Children’s Hospital.

Jane continues to present OB lectures at various ultrasound programs and loves to share her OB images, case studies, and “tips & tricks” to help others improve their image quality and knowledge.

This activity is an approved SDMS CME activity – approved for 3.0 SDMS CME credit.
