USC is pleased to present Dr. Leonard T. Su, Founder and Speaker for Vocementium, for an informative session on mental health and the medical community.
This event is presented in collaboration with:

Course Description:
Mental illness has been classified as an endemic problem which affects both the lay and medical community. With unabashed honesty, this virtual event will document one physician’s journey and struggles with mental illness as it has impacted his career, family, and life. He will discuss this in the context of the medical profession, specifically, and with applications to all aspects of the world, in general. The session will include descriptions of current literature regarding mental illness affecting medical professionals, focusing on both burnout as an occupational phenomenon, and mental illness as a medical diagnosis. Possible solutions to the challenges that occur when medical professionals are afflicted with mental illness will be addressed.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this educational activity, the participant will be able to:
- Describe the personal journey of a medical professional whose career was cut short by mental illness.
- Identify the effects of mental illness on the medical profession, including defining the scope of the problem, the distinctions, and definitions within the problem, and identifying barriers to understanding the problem.
- Discuss possible solutions to the problem of mental illness in the medical community.
About Our Speaker:
Dr. Leonard T. Su is a (semi)-retired Vascular Surgeon who, in his state of mind, found it fascinating to create a blog about the results of untreated mental illness. His is a mission of bringing physician mental illness (and indeed, anyone’s mental illness) out of the shadows, out of hiding and out into the open. It has taken him months since his mind and his career broke. It has taken him those months to realize that there was a reason all of this happened. That reason would be the impetus for his blog and for his pursuits.
His main interests are his family – wife, Rebecca; daughter, Rachael; son, Aidan; and dog, Toby. He also has an interest in painting, drawing, improv, stand-up comedy, public speaking, and stage appearances of any sort. Another favorite for Dr. Su is a certain professional baseball team from Seattle that both fills his heart with joy and breaks it, both with regularity.
This activity has been approved for 1 SDMS CME credit. The CME participant roster will be reported by Ultrasound Solutions Corp. to the SDMS CME Tracker System.
